Jasri, eastern coast of Bali
Pekraman Jasri is one of traditional villages in Karangasem regency at the eastern coast of Bali. It is situated in the neighbourhood of Amlapura and Candidasa, almost in the shadow of the Mount Agung. With the people who mostly live as farmers, fishermen, traditional craftspeople and labors, the people of Jasri are still strongly up hold their unique culture and tradition. The life of the people in Jasri is still very communal with organization of compact board of councils “Desa” or village and “Banjars” the smaller combinations.

Early in the morning
It is a normal little village at the coast. Early is the morning arrive the fishermen after a long night work with their fresh fish. To sell it to local people who come to buy it.

Ceremonies
During our stay in 2016 we have seen the ceremony of a funeral. It takes the whole day, with participation of the people who live in the village. With a procession and great respect and music the dead body is overtaken to the cemetery. In the open air the body is burned, which takes some hours of grief.

After collecting the ashes the ashes are taken in a new procession to a statue, especially made for this occasion at the sea.  After the prayings follows the spread out of the ashes in the sea.

Dances
At the temple near the sea we have seen the ceremonies based on the new moon. This time it took several days and all the villagers were very busy with it. We heard several orchestras of only men or only women, who all used gamelan instruments. We saw the traditional dances of (little) girls, while their mothers played music. These ceremonies made a deep impression because all the elements of life come together.

White Sand Beach (Virgin Beach)
Near Jasri you can find the beautiful “White Sand Beach” or "Virgin Beach". It is outside Jasri and too far to walk, but a bemo with driver Made Wisna can bring you there. From the parking place is a simple path with stones going down to the sea.

On the beach you can find sunbeds for hire and simple warungs, were you can have lunch. Our favourite warung is Yantria café with the owner Yos.

Day tours with Anom
With Anom Arianta we made some day tours. Anom is a careful driver and knows everything about the region, we felt at home in his white car. We went to the beautiful temple Pura Lempuyang Luhur with some long stairs and about 1700 steps to the upper of several smaller temples. Because there are not many tourists and only local visitors it is very peaceful.

Amed
From Jasri we made a day tour with Anom to the beautiful coast from Amed to Ampalura. This coast has no black sand but stones. The result is very clear water, which a lot of tourists use for snorkling.

And no shopping?
In Jasri itself you can find a factory and shop with the name Sensatia botanicals. An American owner with a lot of employment for local people, making nice products like soap, skincare etc. You can even use the website for ordering and bring it home abroad [www.sensatia.com]. Ofcourse with extra costs for transport and taxes in homeland.

Padangbai
Near Jasri you can also find Padangbai, with a harbour and the ferry to leave Bali and go to Lombok.

Possible eruption Mount Agung in 2017
Since august/september 2017 we know of signs that the volcano Mount Agung possibly will give an eruption. The government has evacuated people in 27 villages living around the mountain because the situation is unpredictable. But also people living outside the dangerous magma zone want to evacuate because of the stones in mud streams and volcano ash, when it comes to eruption. Experts compare Agung with other volcanos in the world and Agung in 1963. As long as Bali's airport in Denpasar is open, tourists are invited to come to Bali. Follow the latest update trough the Facebook community: "Bali volcano possible eruption Agung 2017".
